For all Media students...
The second annual (senior) Media Debate takes place this Thursday, 14-12-06 at 3.25 in the Post-16 Centre and we expect it to last until at least 5pm. (Watch how it ended last year here!) It is compulsory for all Media Studies students in Years 12 and 13 to attend as it has been set as homework. A register will be taken and non-attendees will be chased up and will receive a 'K'. Don't forget, there is no excuse not to come as you have had more than a fortnight's warning to re-arrange any other commitments.
And who would want to miss such an exciting event? All Year 13s are participating in the debate to discover who will take the crown as 2006 champions: 13C or 13D. Year 12s are in the audience and will hopefully learn a great deal about some of the key issues in Media Studies, before having their own debate next year. They will get a chance to ask questions to the teams at various points so be prepared! Please take time to check out the blog posting on the Year 13 site to see what the topics will be.
Homework this week will also require all Media students to post a comment at the end of this message about the event. The questions for you to consider will be posted up there on Thursday night.
Thanks to both the teams who are doing a marvellous job preparing for the tough task ahead and especially to the two captains: Pip and Minty (click to see the full debate teams). Thanks, too, go to the judge: Mrs West, and the chair: Mr Day.

This is your chance to comment, Year 12s, so answer each question for homework (before Monday)...
1. Which debate did you find most interesting and why?
2. What is your view on the debate you chose above? Do you agree or disagree with the proposition, and why?
3. Was it a fair result overall (with 13C winning) and why?
1. The debate which proved interesting to me, was the debate that focused on Genre. This was because I found both arguments interesting as various films were discussed, which also as a result educated me.
2. My view on the debate, focusing on Genre, is that hollywood films are produced as a way of escapism for people,in which they are associated with positive connotations. Although, they are repetitive and prove predictable, they are as a result successful due to the conventions used which everyone is familiar with; which therefore proves appealing to the majority of people who view these films.
3. I thought it was a fair overall result, with 13C winning as the people arguing on that side, gave better analysis for their various arguments and from this, it showed how much they had researched the particular topics and I also agreed with their points raised.

1. Which debate did you find most interesting and why?
The debate that I found most interesting was the one on women. This debate was interesting as both sides had strong points and
2. What is your view on the debate you chose above? Do you agree or disagree with the proposition, and why?
My view on the women debate is that women are still exploited but now men are exploited in similar ways. Women are still being exploited to a point means that it is still a patriarchal society. So yeah, i agree with the proposition.
3. Was it a fair result overall (with 13C winning) and why?
Overall, I thought the result was fair as 13C had stronger points in the arguments. Their points were specific and showed they done their research well. Was a bit sad at the end when they announced the wrong winners, butstill both teams done well!

1. Which debate did you find most interesting and why?
The debate which I found to be the most interesting was the debate which focussed on women. This is because I think that the issue applies really well to both current and past media. In addition to this, both sides presented there arguments confidently and were enjoyable to watch.
2. What is your view on the debate you chose above? Do you agree or disagree with the proposition, and why?
Although women are starting to be portrayed in a more independent way in the media I still believe that women still remain subordinate to the power of the male gaze and the media is inherently patriarchal as even when women are presented in a more leading role they are still presented in a sexual way.
3. Was it a fair result overall (with 13C winning) and why?
Overall I think that it was fair for 13C to win based on how well they presented back there arguments i.e. confidence, use of floor space etc. However, in terms of argument I think both teams were equally as good and really showed that both sides had put a lot of time and effort into preparing for the debate.
1. The debate which i found most interesting was the women debate, this is because it was the most enjoyable to watch as both teams had excellent arguements.
2. I think that women are portrayed as sex obejects within the media and are constantly told how to dress and how to look. Also, when the issue came up about the advert that looked women who do not have perfect figures shows that it actually does tell women what they should not look like and with the help of this particular product they can look 'perfect' in the eyes of the media.
3. I think the results were fair because 13c had some strong arguements as well as strong speakers and they deserved to win. Never the less both teams were fantastic and well done to all students who were invovled.

1. Which debate did you find most interesting and why?
I found the debate on ‘the representation of women’ interesting as both teams had a strong argument and focused mainly on how they are still portrayed in the media, in comparison to Hollywood stars.
2. What is your view on the debate you chose above? Do you agree or disagree with the proposition, and why?
In my view women are still exploited as the subject of the male gaze, but are now started to be represented in a more superior way, in all types of media from magazines to film.
3. Was it a fair result overall (with 13C winning) and why?
I think it was a fair result though the other team did have a few stronger points when giving their summary, but speakers in 13C gave strong views when presenting their argument overall as it was evident that they had done a lot of research.
1. Which debate did you find most interesting and why?
The genre debate intrested me the most as both arguments had valid points. I think that art-house films are better to watch overall, but Hollywood does have it's good points too - this is why I found this debate the most intresting.
2. What is your view on the debate you chose above? Do you agree or disagree with the proposition, and why?
I agree with the Genre debate, however only very slightly. I do think that Hollywood have produced far too many repetitive films in recent times. However, there are many films that are original and aren't dumbed down. Art-house films are better in my opinion as I perfer a film that allows me to think about a subject in ways that I wouldn't have previously.
3. Was it a fair result overall (with 13C winning) and why?
I felt that 13C's arguement was presented better than 13D's, with one or two exceptions who were very good for their side.

1. Which debate did you find most interesting and why?
The debate which i found to be the most interesting was the Womens debate. Both arguements were presented very well, and both teams had strong points, making the debate interesting to watch.
2. What is your view on the debate you chose above? Do you agree or disagree with the proposition, and why?
I think that the media is patriarchal, and women are still subordinate in the male gaze (despite the fact that this has decreased in recent years) The majority of women are portrayed as "sex objects" trying to promote a role model to the audience. However the topic is extremly controversial, therefore both of the arguements were convincing.
3. Was it a fair result overall (with 13C winning) and why?
I think it was fair, however Some of the points that 13D had made, were actually better. Overall 13C had a stronger debate, and presented their arguement better,
1. Which debate did you find most interesting and why?
The debate i found most interesting was the one on "women"
2. What is your view on the debate you chose above? Do you agree or disagree with the proposition, and why?
i agree with the proposition because women are shown as a "sex object" but then again men are being shown as this aswell so it is equal to an extent
3. Was it a fair result overall (with 13C winning) and why?
yes it was! because they had stronger point

1. Which debate did you find most interesting and why?
i found the women debate to be the best because it constantly kept me interested, the arguments were very well presented, and some very strong points were made.
2. What is your view on the debate you chose above? Do you agree or disagree with the proposition, and why?
i definatly disagree that the media is still inherantly patrircal because females are given much bigger roles and many films have females as their main charecter and males as the subject of female gaze. However i think it is also true that females are still represented as sex objects even in leading roles.
3. Was it a fair result overall (with 13C winning) and why?
Erm... i cant really remember but i know i found it very difficult to choose who was better as both teams had good arguments and great debating skills!

1. All 3 debates were interesting but out of the 3, I mostly enjoyed the GENRE debate because both groups had excellent arguments, as I myself watch both Hollywood and Art house films, so the topic firstly interested me, and secondly this debate had the most interaction with the FLOOR, so this kept everyone going.
2. I agree with the ‘Genre’ debate, but to some extent only. I do intend to think that Hollywood produces repetitive and unimaginative movies in recent times, yet there are filmmakers out there who come up with original ideas and narratives. At times Art-house films are finer in my view, because they are more imaginative and credible in narrative, because it makes us think and reflect, whereas if it were Hollywood I wouldn't have.
3. I think it was a fair result overall, both groups had made points which were highly polemical, but 13C had presented their argument much better.
1) All 3 debates were very interesting, however i think that the second debate was the most interesting as alot of strong points were said by both debating teams, the teams each had very good points.
2) i agree to the fact that hollywood films are there because it is what people want, however in the debate a few points were made that wernt really that convincing, but i still would like to suggest that art house cinema films have a very neich audience, you dont really come across alot of people on the street that might say they like that kind of film.
3) it was a fair result, as the points made were very strong and understandable, they were also backed up by evidence and examples, which made it even stronger.

1. Which debate did you find most interesting and why?
i found the debate which was about arthouse fims intersting as it was very arugumentative and was very competative.
2. What is your view on the debate you chose above? Do you agree or disagree with the proposition, and why?
i agree with the propsition as the team that i tought should win, won and i thought it should win as c-squad put up better points than ng unit.
3. Was it a fair result overall (with 13C winning) and why?
no. as i thought c-squad overall played a better part in the debate evening overall. And i fel that mr day did not do justice on th result as he got it wrong mocking the oppsite team.

1. Which debate did you find most interesting and why?
The debate that I found the most interesting was the debate between 'hollywood' and 'arthouse' movies. This is because both sides put their argument across to the audience in a very convincing way.
2. What is your view on the debate you chose above? Do you agree or disagree with the proposition, and why?
I disagree with the proposition and think that hollywood movies are actually better than arthouse movies as it can be based on real life and also be a form of escapism.
3. Was it a fair result overall (with 13C winning) and why?
I think that it was really close as both sides seemed like they did their research very well and did argue for their side very strongly.

1) the debate which i thought was the most interesting was the women debate. i think this because it was very entertaining and both sides were arguing with alot of facts which makes their point much more stronger.
2)i think that the media is no longer male dominated. there are many women coming up in the media and they are given as much priority as men, as the time is passing women are being represented more in the media therefore i think that men are not superior than women.
3) i think that the team which won the debate did actually deserve to win because they presented alopt of facts and opinions to further prove their point. however, the mix up at the end by the judges was not a right way to announce the results as it did cause alot of friction. overall 13c did deserve to win as they won 2 out of the 3 debates in my opinion due to their stronger views which shows that they did their research thoroughly.

1. Which debate did you find most interesting and why?
i really enjoyed the womens debate, i think that both teams researched the information really well and the way the argument was set up was really good.
2. What is your view on the debate you chose above? Do you agree or disagree with the proposition, and why?
my view on this issue was that women are only seen for their image rather than their knowledge. i didn't like the fact that each time was always focussing on each topic for instance one of the sides kept bringing up the same information repeating it and it would just become boring hearing the same thing over and over again.
3. Was it a fair result overall (with 13C winning) and why?
I think both teams were really good, but also think it was a fair result wih 13 c winning because they did make a cleare view of what they were talking about. they also entertained us as the audience and i understood everyones comments clearly, however it was very harsh that the results got mixed up at the end.

1. Which debate did you find most interesting and why?
I found the women debate more interesting, however both sides did have strong points towards the debates.
2. What is your view on the debate you chose above? Do you agree or disagree with the proposition, and why?
my view on this debate is that women are still exploited in todays society.however men are also being seen through a more female gaze in more recent films and magazines . i agreed with the propsition.
3. Was it a fair result overall (with 13C winning) and why?
overall i think it was fair however the mix up at the end brought some of the teams hopes down.

i found the hegemony debate the most interesting, this was because it was interesting to see how people would argue against how big of an effect the media has upon us.
i believe that hegemony does effect us greatly. we are greatly influenced by the media and cannot hide from the fact that it dictates many areas of our lives.
i feel the outcome was fair, however if i were to judge the debate i would of called it a draw. evenly contested.

1)i found the debate on how women are portayed in the media the most interesting. this is because i did not understand what the last one was about.
2)i think women are portrayed as sex objects because in every film the woman who is the main character is always skinny, sexy and the rest...
3)i think both teams did well...but the team which did not win had stronger points.

1. Which debate did you find most interesting and why?
I particularly enjoyed the women debate. The reason for why this is because they had presented their points well and I enjoyed hearing it.
2. What is your view on the debate you chose above? Do you agree or disagree with the proposition, and why?
I still believe that women are subordinate to the males, and that the society is still patriarchal, however women’s are starting to be more independent, and they are getting portrayed like this slowly.
3. Was it a fair result overall (with 13C winning) and why?
yes I believe it was fair that 13 won, as they had well structured points and they developed there arguments well. However I also believe that the other team was good too, as they all put effort in the debate.
Naziya (i dnt know what happened before but this is my comment)
1) i found the debate about hollywood and arthouse movies the most intresting. this is because both the team put forward very good points and because it entertained me the most out of the other debates.
2)both the teams put strong arguments accross, but i agree that art houe movies are the only thing worth watching. this is because they really challenge the viewer and raise anigmas. also, they are more original, as hollywodd provides repetitive movies.
3)i thought that it was a really tight debate but i think it was fair that 13c won because they put forward the best arguments.

1. debate was the most interesting to me. It was interesting because no matter what, no one can deny that the media has some, if not, a lot of influence on our daily lives. The media is everywhere. So for someone to fight against the point that the media's power does not influence us is very interesting.
2. I agree with the proposition that the mass media in the UK still seek to promote hegemony and are responsible for injecting passive audiences with dominant ideologies. One reason i agree is because of the 'hypodermic needle therory'. The theory is that the media injects passive audiences with dominant ideologies and because their is such a theory, that shows that the media must be injecting us with ideologies. In addition no one can deny that the media is everywhere around us, from TV, radio, internet, newspapers, magazines etc.
3. I feel that i would have to call this debate right down the middle, as both 13C and 13D showed great knowledge of their topics and gave strong examples to back them up.

i found the marven debate intresting because i thougth there was no right or wrong because of the ideas and thougths presented from both groups. they both raised really good issues and it was quite hard to judge who won that. also the emotions shown in this argument were vital, which showed the group had put alot of work into it.
i think the groups put alot of effort into this debate about the marven theory and for which the marven theory does not exsist. they both had really good arguments however i felt towards the end that my opinion fell to the ide that the marven theory doesnt exsist anymore and that women are starting to be portrayed as they really are and not just seen as possesion.
it was fair that 13c won it because of the reason, their arguments were more stronger and more appealing that the other groups. it felt to me as 13c presented their arguments in a way that the audience was made to collude with them.

1)debate...interesting...
i found the debate about women the most interesting because i think the media represent women in the wrong way...n a more positive and independent view on women shld b potrayed...!!
2)women are objectified and are only so popular in the media..so they can b looked at by men..!! i think patriarchy still exists and women will always be looked down on by men.
3)oooo wow that bit at da end was FUNNI!!!! lol i think 12c brought forward a stronger arguement..there wer very few times wen nothing was said...12c always had somethin t say.

1. Which debate did you find most interesting and why?
the debate i found most interesting was the one if the mulvey theory still is inherent. i found it interesting as there were strong arguments on both sides and it was hard to vote for one side.
2. What is your view on the debate you chose above? Do you agree or disagree with the proposition, and why?
i think that the media is patriachle as music videos such as 50 cent's, he refers womens as...well as inferior to men. however films such as 40 days and 40 nights and legally blonde challenges the mulvey theory as men are portrayed as inferior to women, as the women have the power over...
3. Was it a fair result overall (with 13C winning) and why?
i think that the results were fair as the last group who were arguing on the hegemony debate pulled it off as they were a good team of spokesman. they were fluent and confident. however 13d did have some good arguments on the mulvey theory.
p.s. hopefully there won't be no mess up next year.
1. i found the womens debate interesting because i felt that the debate was equally good on both sides, and good argumets were brought forward.
2. i do not agree with the proposition because i strongly feel that men are still superior to men.
3. no i dont think it was a fair, result i feel that 13d shoudl of won as they had stronger arguments.
xx Princess Vanita xx
1. Personally i found the debate about 'women' more interesting as a whole.
2. The 'women'debate, can be agreed on and ocaasionally diagreeed because in some cases women can be seen to have the upper hand in some cases they are seen to be the people behind the scenes so overall i think the world is more patrical society but women will make a break through.
3.at the end of the day 12C, won for a reason but at times the oppositon did have a better point which could be argued. But as it goes the best 'man' or in this case team wins...
